The Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act, 1996 makes Ontario’s public sector more open and accountable to taxpayers. The act requires organizations that receive public funding from the Province of Ontario to make public, by March 31 each year, the names, positions, salaries and total taxable benefits of employees paid $100,000 or more in the previous calendar year.

Every year, the Ontario government publishes its annual Sunshine List of public sector servants with six-figure salaries. According to the document, Trent University's 329 staffers made the Sunshine List, earning total compensation of $48,737,811.19 in 2022.

Topping the list for the Trent University was President and Vice-Chancellor Leo Groarke, who brought home $305,000.80 in 2022.

Following Leo Groarke was Provost and Vice-President, Academic Michael Khan, with annual earnings of $240,000.80. Dean, Science Holger Hintelmann made $231,166.40, Dean, Trent/Fleming School of Nursing Kirsten Woodend made $230,502.41, and Full Professor Richard Hurley round out the top-five highest-paid employees with $230,000.64 for the Trent University 2023 Sunshine List.
